Redefining success

changing how achievement is measured, often toward meaning, balance, or purpose.

In cyber security, redefining success means changing the metric of achievement from simple output, such as blocked alerts or closed tickets, to outcomes that matter more, such as reduced risk, faster detection, and stronger recovery. A team may look busy while still missing phishing campaigns, credential theft, or data exfiltration if it measures the wrong things. Success is therefore often reframed around resilience, business continuity, and the ability to contain damage quickly.

This idea matters because attackers also change what “success” means. Modern intrusions may avoid loud destruction and instead aim for stealth, persistence, or quiet access to accounts and data. Defenders respond by redefining success in practical terms: shorter dwell time, better incident triage, fewer privilege escalations, and clean restoration after compromise. In mature security programs, the goal is not to stop every attempt, but to build systems and teams that stay effective when attacks inevitably get through.
