Recovery layer

Backup and restoration capabilities that help return systems to service after disruption.

A recovery layer is the part of a security stack that restores data, services, and systems after an incident. It typically includes backups, snapshots, replication, restore testing, and procedures for bringing critical applications back online. In practice, it is the difference between surviving a disruption and being forced to negotiate from a position of outage.

In cyber security, recovery matters because prevention is never perfect. Ransomware, destructive malware, accidental deletion, and infrastructure failure can all bypass or overwhelm defensive controls. A well-designed recovery layer reduces downtime, limits data loss, and helps defenders rebuild with confidence. In real environments, attackers often try to delete backups or encrypt shared storage first, so defenders protect recovery assets with offline copies, access controls, immutability, and regular restoration drills. Recovery is not a substitute for detection or containment, but it is a core resilience control when those layers are breached.
