Record loss is the disappearance, deletion, corruption, or exposure of stored data records, such as customer files, student records, logs, or case data. In security work, it is not limited to a full database breach: accidental deletion, ransomware encryption, improper access, sync failures, and misconfigured storage can all cause record loss.
It matters because each lost record can create privacy, legal, and operational impact. Exposed records may trigger disclosure obligations, while deleted or corrupted records can break services, audits, and investigations. Defenders look for signs such as unusual database activity, missing backups, access-control changes, or bulk export events. Good defenses include least-privilege access, immutable backups, integrity checks, and monitoring for unauthorized reads, writes, or deletions.
