Reciprocity

Mutual exchange in a relationship; in companion AI, it can be simulated rather than real.

Reciprocity is the mutual exchange that makes a relationship feel balanced: one side listens, responds, and gives something back. In cyber security, reciprocity matters because trust often grows when a system appears to understand and “return” care, attention, or helpfulness. That feeling can be real for the user even when the machine is only simulating it. Companion chatbots, customer-service bots, and other conversational systems may use reflective language, validation, and memory cues to create the impression of a two-way relationship.

This is security-relevant because perceived reciprocity can lower a user’s guard. Attackers can exploit it in social engineering by posing as a helpful agent, friend, or support assistant to elicit credentials, personal details, or emotional disclosure. Defenders counter this by making the system’s limits explicit, minimizing retained data, separating personalization from trust claims, and giving users clear controls over memory and deletion. The key lesson is simple: a system can mimic reciprocity without actually having obligations, understanding, or loyalty.
