Recipient address

The destination field in a transfer, here described as the carrier for encoded recovery data.

A recipient address is the destination field in a transfer. In blockchain systems such as Ethereum, it identifies where a transaction is sent, and it can also carry small amounts of encoded data depending on how the transaction is formed. Because the field is standardized and easy for software to read, it is useful for lightweight signaling.

In cyber security, attackers may abuse a recipient address as a covert recovery channel, embedding compact instructions or a pointer to command-and-control infrastructure rather than moving data directly. That makes it harder to disable than a fixed server address, because the malware can recover its next stage from ordinary-looking chain activity. Defenders look for unexpected blockchain interaction, unusual parsing of transaction fields, and endpoint behavior that suggests the host is reading on-chain data when it has no business need to do so.
