Rate lock

a contractual commitment that keeps a price unchanged for a stated duration.

A rate lock is a contractual promise that a price will stay unchanged for a stated period. In utility billing, lending, subscriptions, and cloud contracts, it gives customers cost certainty and makes it easier to compare offers. The lock usually applies to a specific component, such as a per-unit rate, while other charges may still vary.

In cyber security, rate locks matter because the systems that enforce them must protect contract records, pricing tables, and billing logic from tampering. An attacker who changes rates, replays old terms, or exploits weak change control can cause fraud, disputes, or unauthorized discounts. Defenses include access control, signed or immutable records, audit logs, and segregation of duties so pricing changes are traceable and hard to alter silently.
