QIR

Quantum Intermediate Representation, a common intermediate format designed to improve interoperability across quantum systems.

QIR, or Quantum Intermediate Representation, is a shared intermediate format used to express quantum programs in a way that multiple tools, compilers, and hardware backends can understand. It sits between high-level code and device-specific instructions, making it easier to translate the same workload across different quantum platforms.

In cyber security, QIR matters because interoperability also affects control. A common representation can reduce vendor lock-in, improve reproducibility, and make it easier to audit how a quantum workflow was compiled and executed. In real environments, defenders may use QIR to compare compiler behavior, test portability, or validate that a workload has not been altered in transit through the stack. Attackers would be more likely to target the layers around it, such as build pipelines, translation tools, or runtime configuration, where malicious changes could silently affect results. QIR does not eliminate risk, but it gives organizations a clearer control point for governance and inspection.
