Public-space biometric identification

Use of biometric tools in places accessible to the public, where privacy and civil-liberties risks are elevated.

Public-space biometric identification is the use of facial recognition, gait analysis, or similar biometric tools in places open to the public, such as streets, stations, airports, or lobbies. Unlike one-to-one verification, it often tries to identify people from a live scene against a watchlist or database. This makes it powerful, but also highly sensitive: mistakes can affect innocent bystanders, and the system can be used for broad surveillance rather than a narrow security purpose.

In cyber security, the main risks are not only privacy and civil-liberties concerns, but also compromise of the cameras, models, logs, and identity databases that support the system. Attackers may spoof a sensor with photos or video, evade detection with masks or adversarial patterns, or tamper with the matching pipeline to hide activity or trigger false positives. Defenders reduce risk with strict authorization, access controls, liveness checks, audit logs, data minimization, and narrow use policies. The goal is to keep the tool accountable and resistant to misuse.
