ProfileXML

An XML-based format used to define Windows VPN profile settings for deployment.

ProfileXML is an XML-based format used to define Windows VPN profile settings for deployment. It can describe tunnel type, authentication methods, server addresses, routing rules, device or user tunnel behavior, and other options that tell Windows how to build a VPN connection.

It matters because many enterprise remote-access deployments rely on ProfileXML to configure Always On VPN at scale through tools such as MDM platforms or configuration management systems. In defense, administrators use it to standardize secure settings across fleets and to troubleshoot connection failures by checking whether the deployed profile matches policy. In attacks, a user or adversary with configuration access could alter the XML to weaken authentication, change traffic routes, or disrupt connectivity, which is why profile integrity and deployment controls are important.
