Profile takeover is the unauthorized control of a user account or online identity. An attacker who takes over a profile can read messages, send requests, change recovery details, and impersonate the real owner. In messaging apps and social platforms, this can make scams especially convincing because the account already carries a trusted name, contact list, and history.
Takeovers usually happen through stolen passwords, phishing, session hijacking, SIM swapping, or abuse of account recovery features. In practice, defenders look for sudden login alerts, changed contact information, unusual messages, or account lockouts. Strong passwords, multi-factor authentication, device checks, and out-of-band verification help reduce risk. If a message seems urgent but comes from a familiar profile, verify it through a different channel before acting.
