Probe and agent

Components that collect data or receive commands so a central platform can manage remote systems.

A probe is a component that gathers status, inventory, or performance data from a system or network segment. An agent is software installed on a managed device that receives instructions, reports telemetry, and carries out remote tasks. In remote monitoring and management platforms, probes and agents let a central console supervise many endpoints from one place.

These components matter because they sit on a trusted management path. If an attacker compromises the control server, steals credentials, or abuses a legitimate update channel, they may issue commands through agents or hide activity in normal administrative traffic. Defenders should protect the management plane with MFA, network segmentation, signed updates, strong logging, and tight access controls. Unusual agent behavior, unexpected probes, or remote actions outside maintenance windows can be early signs of abuse.
