Privilege monitoring is a security control that watches for elevated access, unusual permission changes, and suspicious use of administrative rights inside a system or platform. It can alert when a user suddenly gains higher privileges, a service account starts acting like an administrator, or a process accesses resources it normally should not reach.
This matters because attackers often try to escalate privileges after an initial foothold. If they can obtain admin rights, they may disable defenses, read sensitive data, or move across systems. In defense, privilege monitoring helps detect those steps early by comparing activity against expected roles, tracking privilege grants and revocations, and flagging abnormal login, token, or command patterns. In platforms like monitoring or management consoles, weak privilege monitoring can hide abuse of trusted accounts, while strong monitoring creates audit trails and faster incident response.
