Power management is the set of techniques electronics use to store, regulate, and conserve energy. In small connected devices, it includes battery monitoring, sleep modes, wake-on-event logic, voltage regulation, and efficient use of radios and sensors. The goal is simple: keep the device working for as long as possible without wasting power.
In cyber security, power management matters because a device that runs out of energy cannot detect, alert, or defend. Low-power sensors, cameras, and IoT endpoints are often designed to wake briefly and stay dormant most of the time. Attackers may try to speed up battery drain with repeated triggers or forced communication, creating a denial-of-service effect. Defenders use careful duty cycling, tamper-resistant power design, and low-battery alerts to reduce silent failure. Good power management helps a security device stay available, reliable, and harder to disable.
