Polling window

The brief period when a client checks a remote service for updates or configuration.

A polling window is the brief period when a client contacts a remote service to check for updates, configuration, or other instructions. The client may repeat these checks on a schedule or at startup. If a service’s response changes briefly, only clients that check during that interval may receive the altered information.

In cyber security, polling windows matter because attackers may exploit trusted update or configuration systems to deliver malicious instructions or downloads. Defenders should correlate endpoint telemetry with historical DNS, proxy, and update records: a clean response today does not prove that a device received only safe content earlier. Authenticated update channels, signed packages, and monitoring for unusual downloads or processes help reduce and detect this risk.
