Plant consolidation is the reduction of multiple production sites into fewer facilities, or even a single site. In manufacturing, it can improve efficiency and simplify management, but it also concentrates people, systems, inventory, and output into a smaller operational footprint.
In cyber security, that concentration matters because a ransomware incident, malware outbreak, or loss of access to key OT and IT systems can have a larger business impact when there is little redundancy. If one plant supports most production, a disruption can affect scheduling, procurement, shipping, and customer commitments at once. Attackers often exploit this pressure in extortion campaigns, knowing that downtime is expensive. Defenders respond by building resilience: segmented networks, tested backups, alternate production arrangements, incident response plans, and recovery procedures that do not depend on a single facility. Plant consolidation is not a vulnerability by itself, but it increases the cost of any cyber event that interrupts operations.
