pgvector

A Postgres extension for storing and searching embeddings with vector similarity methods.

pgvector is a PostgreSQL extension that lets the database store and search embeddings, which are numeric representations of text, images, or other content. It adds vector data types and similarity search methods so applications can find items that are “close” in meaning, not just exact string matches.

In cyber security, pgvector is useful for semantic search over alerts, threat reports, malware descriptions, and internal documents. Analysts can quickly retrieve related incidents, cluster similar events, or power RAG systems that answer questions from approved security data. It also supports defenses such as phishing triage and log investigation by matching new content against known patterns. The security tradeoff is that the embedding store becomes part of the trust boundary: poisoned documents, weak access control, or unvalidated retrieval results can mislead an AI workflow. For that reason, pgvector deployments should be protected with the same care as other sensitive production data.
