Perimeter model

A security approach that assumes the inside of the network is more trusted than the outside.

A perimeter model is a security approach that treats an organization’s internal network as more trusted than external networks. It typically relies on a boundary—such as a firewall or VPN—to separate the “inside” from the “outside,” with stronger checks at the edge and broader access once a user or device is inside.

This model matters because hybrid work, cloud services, and mobile devices make network location a weak signal of trust. In real attacks, a stolen account or compromised device can cross the perimeter and reach internal resources if access is overly broad. Defenders can reduce this risk by verifying identity and device health, limiting access to necessary resources, and monitoring activity regardless of where a connection originates. These practices support a shift toward Zero Trust rather than assuming that anything inside the network is safe.
