PDF, or Portable Document Format, is a file format designed to preserve a document’s layout across different devices and software. It is commonly used for forms, reports, and scanned records, and may contain text, images, metadata, or embedded files.
In cybersecurity, a PDF can be legitimate evidence or a vehicle for risk: attackers may use malicious links, embedded content, or crafted files to exploit vulnerable software or deceive recipients. When PDFs appear in an alleged data leak, their count alone does not establish authenticity, origin, or exposure of sensitive information. Defenders should handle samples through authorized, controlled processes, inspect files safely, and verify provenance against reliable records.
