A payment lure is a message built to push a victim into sending money or entering card, bank, or identity details. It often uses urgency and authority, such as a fake fine, invoice, tax notice, delivery fee, or account suspension warning. The goal is not to hack a system directly, but to make the target act quickly before verifying the request.
Payment lures matter because they are effective in phishing, smishing, and fraud campaigns. A user who follows the prompt may land on a fake payment page, disclose sensitive data, or authorize a transfer to an attacker-controlled account. Defenses focus on slowing the decision: check the sender, avoid payment through unexpected messages, inspect the destination address, and confirm any charge through an official channel rather than the message itself.
