Payment account misuse is unauthorized activity involving a billing or financial account tied to a service, such as a subscription portal, reseller dashboard, or cloud billing profile. It can include opening fraudulent charges, changing payout settings, stealing stored payment methods, or using a legitimate account to pay for an attacker’s infrastructure.
In cyber security, this matters because payment accounts often sit close to other sensitive controls: admin access, invoices, user records, and service provisioning. Attackers may target them after stealing credentials, abusing weak password recovery, or compromising a trusted third-party tool. Defenders should watch for unusual billing changes, new payees, failed login spikes, and unexpected service upgrades or refunds. Strong MFA, least privilege, and separation between operations and finance reduce the damage if one account is abused.
