Partner handoff

the transfer of data between organizations or systems in a marketing chain.

Partner handoff is the transfer of data between organizations or systems in a marketing chain, such as an app, an ad platform, a measurement vendor, or a downstream partner. The handoff may include identifiers, event logs, audience segments, or conversion signals. Each transfer creates a new boundary where data can be copied, enriched, retained, or misused.

In cyber security, partner handoffs matter because many privacy failures happen without a classic breach. The risk is often in the design of the data flow: too much data shared, weak consent controls, unclear purpose limits, or poor segmentation. Attackers can abuse partner channels to collect more user information than intended, while defenders reduce exposure by minimizing fields, restricting onward sharing, encrypting transfers, and auditing who receives what and why.
