Page discovery is the process of finding web pages or URLs that can be collected, crawled, indexed, or extracted. It is a basic step in many web automation systems because software must know what to request before it can gather content. Discovery can come from search results, sitemaps, internal links, directories, or targeted probing of known URL patterns.
In cyber security, page discovery matters because the same techniques can support both defense and abuse. Defenders use it to inventory exposed pages, find forgotten admin panels, and verify what public content a site actually publishes. Attackers use it to locate hidden endpoints, staging sites, leaked documents, or application paths that are not meant to be visible. When discovery is automated, rate limits, robots rules, scope controls, and authentication boundaries become important. Poorly governed discovery can increase load, expose sensitive content, or feed unauthorized scraping and reconnaissance.
