Package trust enforcement

A control that applies security policy to software packages before they are accepted into a workflow.

Package trust enforcement is a security control that checks a software package against policy before the package is allowed into a workflow. That policy may consider the package’s source, signature, provenance, maintainers, or other trust signals. If the package does not meet the rules, it can be blocked, flagged for review, or allowed only under exception handling.

This matters because many attacks enter through dependencies, registries, and install scripts that developers accept during everyday work. By enforcing trust earlier, teams can stop risky packages before they are committed, built, or deployed. In defense, this control may appear inside an IDE, package manager, CI pipeline, or policy service. In attacks, adversaries try to bypass it by using typosquatted packages, compromised accounts, or malicious updates that look legitimate enough to pass weak checks. Effective enforcement depends on clear policy, auditable decisions, and consistent handling of exceptions.
