Output gating

A control step that checks or approves AI output before it is published or shared.

Output gating is a control step that reviews or approves AI-generated content before it is published, forwarded, or used to trigger another action. In practice, it sits between the model and the outside world, where it can inspect text, files, API calls, or workflow actions for policy violations, sensitive data, or unsafe instructions.

It matters in cyber security because AI systems can amplify mistakes quickly. If an assistant can draft a message, summarize confidential material, or call a publishing tool, a single bad response can become an information leak or an unauthorized action. Output gating helps defend against prompt injection, data disclosure, and over-privileged agents by adding redaction, human approval, allowlists, and logging. Used well, it turns the model into a source of suggestions, not an automatic distribution channel.
