Origin masking

The practice of making the true source of network traffic difficult to identify.

Origin masking is the practice of making the true source of network traffic difficult to identify. Attackers do this by routing connections through proxies, relays, VPNs, compromised hosts, or chained infrastructure so defenders only see an intermediate exit point. The visible IP address may look active and legitimate, but it is not the real operator’s endpoint.

This matters because attribution, blocking, and incident response all become harder when the source is obscured. In real attacks, origin masking is often part of multi-hop proxying, botnet traffic, or covert command-and-control paths. Defenders respond by correlating network flows with endpoint telemetry, DNS activity, and authentication logs, and by looking for tunneling, relay chaining, and unusual outbound encryption rather than relying on IP reputation alone.
