Optional Component

A feature or package not required for basic operation, but still capable of expanding attack surface.

An optional component is a feature or package that is not required for a system’s basic operation, but can still add functions such as monitoring, reporting, or integration. Because it sits outside the core path, it is often installed, configured, or updated less carefully than the main service.

In cyber security, optional components matter because they can expand attack surface. A feature that is rarely used may still expose network listeners, parsers, or administrative actions that attackers can target. Defenders should inventory these components, disable what is not needed, and keep the rest patched and monitored. In real incidents, forgotten add-ons or side services often become the easiest route to command injection, credential theft, or unauthorized access.
