An opt-in service is a tool or program that only runs after a project, administrator, or user explicitly agrees to join. Nothing is scanned, collected, or processed until participation is enabled. In cyber security, opt-in design matters because it defines consent, scope, and trust.
Defenders use opt-in services for tasks like vulnerability scanning, telemetry, or security review so maintainers can control what is analyzed and when. This reduces surprise traffic, avoids touching systems without permission, and helps keep disclosure workflows orderly. Attackers also study opt-in systems: they may abuse weak enrollment checks, impersonate participants, or hide malicious activity inside legitimate-looking signup flows. For security teams, the key controls are clear authorization, transparent data handling, and a way to leave the program cleanly.
