Operator interface

The human-facing layer used to issue commands and read machine state.

An operator interface is the human-facing control layer of a system: screens, buttons, dials, touch panels, or software consoles used to issue commands and read machine state. In industrial and cyber-physical environments, it is often called an HMI. It translates complex internal status into cues a person can act on, and turns human input into machine actions.

In cyber security, the operator interface is a high-value target because it sits at the point where people and machines trust each other. Attackers may abuse it to disguise unsafe conditions, trigger unauthorized actions, or trick operators into approving bad commands. Defenders harden it with access controls, clear alarms, audit logs, least-privilege roles, and unambiguous state displays. Good interface design matters because confusing controls, hidden alerts, or inconsistent feedback can lead to mistakes even without malware.
