Operational signal

a cue that may justify checking logs, access, and service integrity.

An operational signal is a clue that something may warrant closer technical review, even if it is not yet proof of compromise. It can be a suspicious claim, a new hash, unusual login patterns, a service change, or a report that does not yet match internal evidence. In cybersecurity, the value of an operational signal is that it helps teams decide where to look next.

This matters because attackers often create noise before defenders have full facts. A ransomware post, for example, may justify checking logs, access records, endpoint alerts, and service integrity. Defenders use operational signals to triage quickly, separate rumor from evidence, and avoid overreacting to unverified claims. The signal is not the incident itself; it is the prompt to verify whether an incident is actually present.
