Operational scripts

automated code that supports routine business or technical tasks.

Operational scripts are automated code used to run routine business or technical tasks, such as moving files, processing EDI messages, generating reports, syncing databases, or starting scheduled jobs. They reduce manual work and keep systems consistent, but they also become part of the trust chain for day-to-day operations.

In cyber security, operational scripts matter because attackers often target them to understand how a network works, steal embedded credentials, or interrupt critical workflows. A copied script can reveal server names, file paths, API keys, or business logic that helps an intruder expand access. Defenders should inventory these scripts, store them in version control, protect secrets, limit execution rights, and monitor changes closely, since tampering can cause silent disruption even when servers remain online.
