Operational fatigue is the strain that builds up when people must repeat manual tasks, handle exceptions, and work around friction in a process or tool. In cyber security, it often appears when analysts, administrators, or help desk staff spend too much time on routine approvals, log review, access resets, or alert triage. Over time, the repeated effort makes teams slower, less consistent, and more likely to miss important signals.
This matters because attackers often benefit from tired workflows. A flood of alerts can hide real activity, and repeated prompts or exceptions can push users to click through warnings or accept risky defaults. Defenders reduce operational fatigue by automating low-value work, simplifying approval paths, tuning alerts, and clarifying roles. When the workflow is easier to follow, security controls are more reliable and staff are less likely to create unsafe workarounds.
