Operating assumptions

The conditions a system expects in order to work as designed.

Operating assumptions are the conditions a system expects to be true in order to function correctly. In cybersecurity, these assumptions can include trusted network boundaries, valid user input, stable time settings, specific file formats, or the presence of encryption and authentication. When the real environment matches the design assumptions, the system behaves as intended; when it does not, security controls can fail in unexpected ways.

This matters because attackers often look for places where assumptions are too narrow or simply wrong. For example, a web app may assume requests come from a trusted client, or a service may assume data is already sanitized. If those assumptions are broken, attackers can inject data, bypass checks, or force a system into an unsafe state. Defenders reduce risk by documenting assumptions, testing edge cases, and validating inputs and identities instead of trusting the environment. Clear assumptions make systems easier to harden, monitor, and troubleshoot.
