Open vSwitch (OVS)

A Linux virtual switch used to route and filter traffic in virtualized and overlay-networked environments.

Open vSwitch (OVS) is a Linux virtual switch used to route, filter, and shape traffic inside virtualized hosts and overlay networks. It is commonly used in hypervisors, containers, and cloud infrastructure because it can apply policies while moving packets efficiently between interfaces, bridges, and tunnels.

In security terms, OVS matters because it sits close to the kernel networking stack. Bugs in the kernel datapath or in netlink-based control messages can affect how packet metadata and action lists are validated and processed. If length fields, nested attributes, or buffer boundaries are mishandled, an attacker with local access may be able to trigger memory corruption or privilege escalation. Defenders should check whether a host uses the kernel datapath, keep kernel and vendor backports current, and treat OVS as part of the trusted infrastructure layer, not just a networking feature.
