Open Policy Agent

A policy engine used to evaluate rules and enforce controls across cloud-native systems.

Open Policy Agent (OPA) is a policy engine that evaluates rules and returns allow or deny decisions across cloud-native systems. Teams write policy as code, commonly in the Rego language, and use OPA to check requests, configuration, or runtime inputs against security requirements. In Kubernetes, OPA can sit in the admission path to block risky deployments, such as privileged pods, unsafe image settings, or missing labels and controls.

OPA matters because security policy is often spread across clusters, APIs, and services. Centralizing those rules helps defenders enforce least privilege, compliance, and platform guardrails consistently. In real environments, OPA is used both to prevent misconfigurations before they reach production and to validate access decisions in microservices. Attackers may try to bypass weak policy checks by abusing overly broad permissions or malformed configurations, so strong policy enforcement becomes a practical control, not just a compliance feature.
