On-chain tracing

The practice of following cryptocurrency transactions across public blockchains to identify movement patterns and linked wallets.

On-chain tracing is the practice of analyzing cryptocurrency transactions on public blockchains to follow where funds move and how wallets may be connected. Because blockchains are transparent, investigators can inspect transaction graphs, look for address reuse, identify common funding sources, and cluster wallets that behave like they are controlled by the same actor.

This matters in cyber security because stolen crypto often passes through many hops, mixers, bridges, and exchanges in an attempt to hide its origin. Tracing does not usually prove a real-world identity on its own, but it can reveal movement patterns, link related wallets, and create evidence for exchange alerts, freeze requests, and attribution work. Defenders combine chain analysis with timing, service metadata, and operational mistakes to turn pseudonymous transfers into actionable leads.
