Offline password cracking

Trying password guesses against captured hash material without contacting the target again.

Offline password cracking is the process of testing password guesses against captured hash material without repeatedly contacting the target system. Instead of logging in and triggering lockouts or rate limits, an attacker works on copied data such as password hashes, challenge-response values, or other authentication artifacts. This makes the attack quieter and often much faster than online guessing.

In cyber security, offline cracking matters because a leak of hash material can turn a single exposure into a large credential-recovery problem. Once hashes are stolen from a server, BMC, database, or directory service, defenders lose the ability to slow guesses with account throttling alone. Real attacks often begin with a weak authentication design, a misconfigured management interface, or a data breach that exposes hashes. Defenses focus on preventing hash theft, using strong one-way hashing with salts and modern work factors, limiting exposure of management planes, and choosing credentials that resist GPU-based guessing.
