Non-Cartesian

A coordinate or motion system that does not use the standard perpendicular grid.

Non-Cartesian refers to a coordinate or motion system that does not use the standard perpendicular X-Y grid. Instead of moving in simple horizontal and vertical steps, the system may rely on linked arms, arcs, polar motion, or other geometry. A delta robot or plotter is a common example: one target position is translated into coordinated movement across multiple actuators.

In cyber security, non-Cartesian systems matter because software must convert intent into precise physical motion. That makes firmware, calibration data, and sensor feedback part of the attack surface. If an attacker changes control parameters, position math, or state handling, the machine can misplace tools, skip steps, or produce unsafe motion. Defenders care about these systems in robots, manufacturing tools, and other cyber-physical devices because correctness depends on both code and geometry. Small errors in translation or timing can become visible defects, equipment damage, or safety issues.
