Next-generation firewall

A firewall that inspects traffic more deeply than basic packet filtering.

A next-generation firewall (NGFW) is a firewall that does more than block or allow traffic by IP address and port. It inspects traffic at a deeper layer, often identifying applications, users, protocols, and sometimes embedded threats such as malware or suspicious links. This makes it more useful than basic packet filtering in environments where traffic is encrypted, cloud-based, or highly segmented.

In cyber security, NGFWs matter because attackers often hide in normal-looking connections or move laterally after an initial breach. An NGFW can help defenders enforce policies, detect unusual application behavior, and reduce exposure between networks, branches, and cloud workloads. In real defenses, it is commonly used with intrusion prevention, URL filtering, identity-based access, and logging so security teams can see and control what is actually happening on the network.
