The New Tab page is the screen a browser shows when you open a fresh tab. It often serves as a launch point for search, frequently visited sites, bookmarks, and browser features, so it is one of the most viewed surfaces in everyday browsing.
In cyber security, the New Tab page matters because it shapes user trust and behavior. Attackers may try to mimic a browser start page, redirect it, or use a compromised extension to replace it with a phishing or ad-heavy page. Defenders watch for unexpected homepage or new-tab changes, since these can signal malware, policy tampering, or unwanted software. A familiar-looking New Tab page is not proof of safety; users should still verify URLs and avoid clicking suspicious shortcuts.
