Network Traffic Analysis

inspection of network communications to understand behavior, relationships, and anomalies.

Network Traffic Analysis (NTA) is the inspection of network communications to understand behavior, relationships, and anomalies. It focuses on metadata, packet content, or both to answer practical questions such as which hosts are talking, what protocols are in use, and whether traffic patterns match a known baseline.

In cyber security, NTA matters because many attacks reveal themselves through communication patterns before they are obvious in logs or endpoint alerts. Suspicious lateral movement, command-and-control beacons, data exfiltration, and unusual authentication flows can all stand out as deviations from normal network behavior. Defenders use NTA for threat hunting, incident investigation, and detection engineering, while network teams use it to troubleshoot performance and routing problems. Modern environments make this harder because traffic volumes are high and encryption can hide payloads, so effective NTA tools emphasize flow analytics, anomaly detection, and context that helps teams decide what is routine and what deserves a closer look.
