Network observability is the use of telemetry such as traces, metrics, and logs to understand how distributed systems are behaving. Instead of only checking whether a service is “up,” observability shows how requests move across APIs, clouds, hosts, and network segments, and where latency, failure, or unusual behavior appears.
In cyber security, this visibility is critical because attacks often hide in normal-looking traffic. Observability helps defenders spot credential misuse, unexpected data flows, lateral movement, command-and-control beacons, and agent or service actions that exceed policy. It also supports investigation by letting teams reconstruct what happened across multiple systems and verify whether controls worked as intended. In defenses, network observability is paired with zero trust, segmentation, and alerting so that suspicious activity can be detected quickly and contained before it spreads.
