netrw is a bundled Vim plugin used for file browsing, directory navigation, and related file-transfer tasks. It lets users open directories inside Vim, browse remote paths, and work with files through built-in helpers instead of leaving the editor.
In security terms, netrw matters because it extends the editor’s trusted input paths. If a user opens untrusted files, directories, or remote listings, netrw may process names, paths, and helper data that an attacker can influence. That can turn a convenience feature into part of an exposure path, especially when combined with other parsing or plugin flaws. Defenders reduce risk by keeping Vim patched, disabling netrw if it is not needed, and limiting it on sensitive systems where opening hostile content could trigger unintended behavior.
