NEMA

A U.S. standard family used to define the physical form of plugs and receptacles.

NEMA is a U.S. standard family that defines the physical form of plugs and receptacles. In practice, it tells you how a connector is shaped, keyed, and intended to mate with a corresponding outlet. Common examples include NEMA 1-15 and NEMA 5-15, but the system covers many more variants than most people notice.

In cyber security, NEMA matters because physical power is part of the attack surface. A device, charger, sensor, or field tool must match the local receptacle standard before it can be powered, deployed, or swapped in. Attackers may abuse that assumption with rogue hardware, unauthorized adapters, or tampered power accessories, while defenders use NEMA knowledge to verify equipment compatibility, reduce unsafe improvisation, and plan secure installation of networked devices. The standard itself is not a vulnerability; it is a compatibility map that helps keep infrastructure predictable.
