Negotiated agreement

an agreement reached through discussion rather than a purely adversarial process.

A negotiated agreement is a resolution reached through discussion, where the parties trade proposals and constraints to arrive at an accepted set of actions. In cyber security, it often means agreeing on specific remediation steps, deadlines, monitoring, or compensating controls instead of continuing a purely adversarial dispute.

This matters because security problems are time-sensitive. A negotiated agreement can speed up fixes after an incident, reduce uncertainty, and create a clear record of who must do what. It is useful in regulator-led enforcement, vendor disputes, and incident response planning, where a fast, verifiable outcome can be better than prolonged argument. In practice, defenders use these agreements to formalize patching, access restrictions, logging, or audit checks. The key is that the agreement must be specific and enforceable; vague promises do not reduce risk.
