Mystery shopping is an undercover testing method where an investigator acts like a normal customer to observe how a service, sales process, or support channel behaves in practice. In security work, it helps verify whether stated controls are actually enforced instead of only documented on paper.
It matters because many abuses are visible only during live interaction: deceptive sales claims, weak identity checks, social engineering scripts, or insider-assisted fraud. Defenders use mystery shopping to test call centers, retail flows, KYC steps, and complaint handling. Attackers can also use the same idea to probe a target’s workflow and find gaps in verification or escalation. The value is operational visibility: it reveals the real path from first contact to approval, payment, or data exposure, which can expose hidden incentives and weak controls.
