Muscle-based input

control signals derived from muscle activity rather than from a hand-operated device.

Muscle-based input is a control method that turns muscle activity into computer commands, instead of relying on a hand-operated device like a mouse or keyboard. Systems may read signals from sensors on the skin and map them to actions such as clicking, scrolling, or moving a pointer. Because the input comes from the body, it usually requires calibration and careful signal processing to separate intentional commands from background movement.

In cyber security, this matters because body-signal interfaces create new trust and privacy concerns. The data can reveal sensitive information about a user’s physical condition or behavior, and the control channel may be vulnerable to spoofing, noise injection, or accidental activation if an attacker can influence the sensors or software. Defenders should apply secure sensor handling, local processing where possible, strong permissions, and clear feedback so users can verify what the system interpreted. In real defenses and assistive tools, muscle-based input is valuable because it can provide hands-free access without sacrificing predictability.
