Multi-vendor environment

a network made up of products from several vendors, which can complicate unified policy control.

A multi-vendor environment is a network built from security and infrastructure products from several different vendors. Instead of one uniform platform, defenders may manage firewalls, routers, cloud controls, and monitoring tools that all use different rule formats, interfaces, and approval workflows.

This matters because cyber security depends on consistent policy enforcement. In a mixed-vendor estate, a rule that looks safe in one product may behave differently in another, and changes can be missed when teams rely on separate consoles or inconsistent naming. Attackers benefit from that complexity by exploiting gaps between systems, while defenders use network security policy management, reachability analysis, and centralized change control to reduce blind spots. The goal is not to make every product identical, but to keep policy readable, auditable, and aligned with what the network actually allows.
