MSP (Managed Service Provider)

A company that remotely manages IT systems for multiple customers.

An MSP is a company that remotely manages IT systems for multiple customers. Instead of each business running its own full-time operations team, the MSP uses shared tools to monitor endpoints, deploy patches, manage users, and handle support from a central console. In many environments, that console becomes the control point for several client networks at once.

This matters in cyber security because an MSP environment concentrates trust. If attackers compromise the MSP’s management platform, they may gain access to many downstream systems through one account, one console, or one integration path. That is why MSP tools are attractive targets for ransomware groups and other intruders: they can turn a single breach into broad access. Defenders protect MSP infrastructure with strong authentication, least privilege, logging, segmentation, and rapid review of administrative activity. In incidents involving remote management software, unusual console logins, unexpected privilege changes, or unfamiliar remote actions are often the first signs of trouble.
