MSIX

A Windows application packaging format used to distribute and install software.

MSIX is a Windows application packaging format used to distribute and install software. It bundles an app and its installation metadata into a single package, which helps developers deliver consistent installs and makes software easier to deploy, update, and remove on managed systems.

In cyber security, MSIX matters because a package that installs software is more sensitive than an ordinary document. Attackers may try to use MSIX files as a delivery vehicle for unwanted applications, droppers, or other malicious tooling, especially through email or download links. Defenders can reduce risk by blocking unknown packages at the mail gateway, restricting software installation rights, checking package signatures and sources, and using allowlists or endpoint management to control what can run. Treating MSIX as software, not just a file, helps prevent users from approving a risky install at the inbox or on the desktop.
