Molecular detection is the identification of a chemical compound from a sample using observational or analytical methods such as spectroscopy, chromatography, mass spectrometry, or sensor arrays. The goal is to move from a raw signal to a defensible conclusion about what substance is present.
In cyber security, molecular detection matters wherever digital systems monitor physical hazards: industrial plants, laboratories, airports, water systems, and other critical infrastructure. Connected detectors can spot toxic chemicals, explosive precursors, or contamination, helping defenders confirm incidents and reduce response time. The same systems can also be attacked: adversaries may disable sensors, tamper with calibration, flood operators with false alarms, or spoof telemetry from networked analyzers. For that reason, molecular results should be checked against independent samples, secure logging, and trusted device health data before they are treated as proof of an attack.
